Teifi Pools to Lampeter Originating in the wilds of the Cambrian Mountains, the Teifi River drops quickly down through moorland to her first community at the rural village of Pontrhydfendigaid, home to the ancient monastic ruins of Strata Florida dating back to the 12th Century. The Cambrian Mountains are a designated ‘dark skies’ area which already points to the lack of people and wealth of nature in this highland setting where the river is born. The trail follows the still small river through the unique bog lands of the Cors Caron Nature Reserve before taking a diversion to the market town of Tregaron, offering food and hospitality to the weary traveller. Beyond Tregaron, the Teifi Valley flattens and widens as the river snakes her way to Lampeter, a seat of learning for over 200 years. The trail on this section is varied passing through farmlands and community forestry as well as neolithic hillfort sites. Some of his antics were highlighted by George Borrow in his book ‘Wild Wales’ about his travels around Wales in the early 18th Century. One popular tale is about the time he angered a squire who furiously rode to Twm’s house to take him to task. Seeing the squire approaching, Twm dressed quickly in the guise of an old woman and sat outside his house. When the squire asked of Twm’s whereabouts, Twm in his disguise pointed into the house and offered to hold the squire’s horse and whip while he went into the house. Once out of sight, Twm shed his disguise and rode off to the squire’s house where he told the squire’s wife that he had been sent to get some cash urgently for the squire and the horse and whip were evidence of the veracity of his claim. The wife paid up and Twm Siôn Cati swiftly made off to London, sold the horse and had a wild stay in the capital until he ran out of money and went back to Ceredigion where he hoped he could evade the wrath of the squire.
