Llandysul to Poppit Sands The final stage of the trail is split into three days although it could conceivably be done faster. But like elsewhere on the trail there is much to see. The National Wool Museum in Dre-fach Felindre honours the wool trade which was prolific up to the middle of the 20th Century. Waterfalls, wells and castles feature on this section as well as a wetland wildlife reserve and some stunning walking particularly along the Teifi Gorge. On reaching St Dogmaels, just beyond Cardigan, you will come across the ruined Tironesian abbey which is counterpoint to the ruins of the Cistercian Strata Florida abbey at the start of the trail. You could end here but we recommend you continue to the river estuary at Poppit Sands for the full trail experience. Stage OverviewDay 6Day 7Day 8 Stage 3 Overview Llandysul – Newcastle Emlyn – 10.6 miles / 17 kms Newcastle Emlyn – Cilgerran – 9.8 miles / 15.8 kms Cilgerran – Poppit Sands – 6.6 miles / 10.4 kms Local Legend: Princess Nest Princess Nest was so beautiful that she was known as the Helen of Wales. There is part of her life story that involves Cilgerran Castle (although some say the events you are about to read, happened at Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire!). She was the mistress of King Henry I (a notorious womaniser) bearing him a son – she bore at least nine children to five different men. King Henry arranged for Nest to marry a Norman, Gerald of Windsor who was the Constable of Pembroke Castle and ruler of her father’s former kingdom. The arranged marriage would give a local gravitas to Gerald’s rule and it worked very well overall. But one night, Nest’s second cousin Owain came to Cilgerran Castle and fell madly in love with the beautiful Nest. With a band of warriors, Owain attacked the castle and kidnapped Nest together with two of her children. Gerald notoriously escaped through the privy hole! To cut a long story short, Nest was eventually found and released and Gerald got his just revenge by killing Owain on the battle field.
