Newcastle Emlyn

A busy Carmarthenshire town, Newcastle Emlyn has some interesting ancient cultural heritage along with the modern offering of shops, pubs and cafés. There is also an excellent Attic Theatre where award winning amateur plays are performed so do book a ticket if you are in the area at showtime.

The market town of Newcastle Emlyn in north Carmarthenshire takes its name from the 13th century castle and the district of Emlyn and stretches across the river Teifi into Adpar, Ceredigion. The town and the river have strong historical and industrial links which have made Newcastle Emlyn the busy community it is today.

The castle dates to 1215 and was captured by Owain Glyndwr in the 15thC rebellion against English rule. It changed hands many times over the years and was surrendered to Parliament in 1648 who blew it up leaving it a ruin. Stone from the site was robbed to build much of the town and many of the town’s historic buildings are made from medieval stone.

The late Victorian Town Hall standing on the old market place site was built in 1892 and now houses the Attic Players Theatre, the Town Council Chamber, four business units and the local public library. The Old Court House in Church Street, built in 1868 and the Old Grammar School built in 1867 are reputed to be the oldest buildings in the town. The Bunch of Grapes built in the late 1600s is the oldest pub, of which at one time there were over 52 in the town. Today there are 5 and one hotel.

The town is a conservation area and the river and its surroundings are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Visitors to the Castle grounds can follow a meandering riverside walk or relax in the large picnic site. The force of the river was harnessed to power woollen mills, corn mills and the first power station to generate electricity for the town in 1909. The Cawdor and Fitzwilliam families ran estates on either side of the river –constructing weirs and a fish pass for the gentry fisherman.

A thriving livestock and general market held weekly in the town centre supports the farming community and enables local residents to shop local. The high street has an interesting mix of 50 independent retailers, coffee shops and a large antiques emporium.
