Llandysul

Extract from The Teifi Valley Trail Guide (due to be published in 2026): “Llandysul is at the heart of the Teifi Valley and with a population around 1400, the largest town in the middle section of the Teifi Trail. The oldest building is St Tysul’s Church, with parts dating from the 13th century, but it is built on the religious site founded in about the 6th century by St Tysul, cousin of our Patron Saint, St David.

Llandysul would have expanded around the religious community set up by St Tysul. Although the church has lost most of its original medieval character, it continues to house some unusual features. Set in the interior of the tower is a Romano-British stone inscribed with “Velvor Filia Broho” commemorating Velvor, daughter of Broho. Incorporated into the alter in the Lady Chapel, are ancient cross-inscribed stones that were discovered near Coed-y-Foel. The Church is usually open to visitors.

The coming of the railway in 1864 had a significant effect on the area and its way of life and although situated across the river in Pont-Tyweli, it was called “Llandyssil Station”. A livestock market was situated adjacent to the railway station. The railway created economic opportunities for farmers and for the powerful Teifi Valley woollen industry which could now move produce and stock quickly in and out of the area.

Today, Llandysul enjoys an eclectic mix of award winning shops, artisans, cafes, and businesses. The Trail passes through the Llandysul Memorial park, a beautiful riverside area set up as a memorial to the men who died in the First World War. A walk beside the bank of the Afon Teifi will provide the opportunity to picnic in the park, or maybe watch a cricket match or a game of football.”
