Pontrhydfendigaid ‘Bont’ offers provisions, accommodation and food for the Teifi Valley Trail hiker starting the trail. It is also connected by bus to Aberystwyth where there are train connections to the rest of the UK. Extract from The Teifi Valley Trail Guide (due to be published in 2026): “The village of Pontrhydfendigaid – ‘the bridge of the blessed ford’, (population c. 700) is the first major settlement in the Teifi Valley. Better known locally as ‘Bont’, it straddles the river where the narrow Grade II single arch 18th century humpbacked bridge carrying the B4343 road affords the first main crossing point and it lies at the junction of major ancient routes across the Cambrian Mountains to the east. The history of Pontrhydfendigaid is inextricably linked with Strata Florida. The first houses were perhaps built for Abbey workers and it developed as a place providing the goods and services of the times to the surrounding area. In a previous era the village contained many different shops and trades and included a corn mill and a wool factory. It was also a mining village for the nearby lead and zinc mines, as now reflected in rows of colourfulminers’ cottages. The village is home to the annual Pantyfedwen Eisteddfod held in the modern multi-purpose Pavilion, which also affords a venue for concerts and other events during the year. It was also the birthplace and home of Caradoc Jones, who, in 1995 became the first Welshman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.” Siop y Bont (with Post Office and cash back facility) – 2 Bridge Street, Pontrhydfendigaid, SY25 6EE Red Lion Hotel – Bridge Street, Pontrhydfendigaid SY25 6BH Black Lion B&B – Mill Street, Pontrhydfendigaid Nantyrhelyg Campsite – Pontrhydfendigaid SY25 6BL T21 Bus route from Aberystwyth to Tregaron.
